Introduction
Eating disorders stem from a desire for perfection. People think they need to be perfect or to be in control of some part of their life. They often are unhappy at home, have sicknesses in the house, are bullied at school or told they are fat by others. They just want to be loved and accepted. There are different kinds of Anorexia, from restricting type, binge eating type and purging type. Eating disorders are hard to stop, but by educating ourselves, by not comparing ourselves to others and building others up we can make people feel good about who they truly are and not what others state what the image should be.
History
Anorexia Nervosa was first described in 1684, it was not until the1870s that it was identified and diagnosed. Historically ritual fasting occurred to show devotion to God. Other religions encouraged fasting as respect for animals or for control over people's bodies. During the victorian era, mothers and daughters did not eat much just to be thin and to give good impressions to other men for sex. The first time a photo of anorexia was published was in 1932. The disease was talked about as a long-term fasting or self starvation. Anorexia or self starvation was going on during the Roman Empire but looked like it disappeared during the medieval period when females’ stamina became important. By the late 1600s, doctors started studying “wasting diseases” and by the 1900s, doctors and psychologists recognized eating disorders as a psychological disease. By 1979 anorexia was considered a developmental disorder that shared the characteristics of fear of becoming fat, and poor body image. Nervous loss of appetite is not a very good way to state the actual name Anorexia Nervosa since its based on misunderstanding. Many people that suffer from this condition actually do not at all lack appetite, they are just afraid to put on some extra weight. Before the death of Karen Carpenter, a famous singer, in 1983, the disorder anorexia nervosa was not very much talked about from the media. Right when the death of Carpenter happened the disorder came into public. Once all the news came out, more actresses came out and spoke about their battles of wanting to be thin. They sought professional help and made other young girls around the world that were also battling this awful disorder to know it was ok for them to do the same. Sadly the girls who thought it was ok for them to do the same thing as the actresses were doing, were slowly dying just to be thin. Some girls were pressured to be thin just as they do till this day in the 21st century.
Why does it happen?
Many people may ask why anorexia exists? Many people have the right answer that it comes from judging oneself and others, cyber bullying, rumors going around the media and other causes.
Anorexia happens for many different reasons. Mostly poor self esteem and depression. Having the thoughts in mind about being fat is the greatest fear of someone with the illness. In anorexia the person affected refuses to eat frequently even though they are hungry. Anorexia can sometimes start with weight loss diets. It may be very impossible to open a magazine, or a book, or to turn on the TV without without being confronted with the message that to be fat is to be undesirable. The scariest part of it all is that the kids are involved with the media. Some kids may not fully understand the bad things that can go wrong in life but they will understand that at some point the world has to look perfect. They will want to be part of this so called life, but really it is just a fake background of girls wanting to look like Barbie and boys wanting to look like a superhero. Males also may have a big impact from anorexia. What ever a girl goes through a boy can go through the same thing; self esteem, depression, and health issues with eating and dieting.
Media’s Influence
The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness reports that 70 million people worldwide suffer from eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. http://www.mirror-mirror.org/barbie-and-body-image.htm Approximately 90% of the people who have eating disorders are young women who are between 12 and 25. Many of these girls played with Barbie dolls or were influenced by the media before they developed their eating disorders. Having the idea that we should have this “perfection” of looking like a Barbie doll is not the only cause of the eating disorders. The toys that children play with influence them to want to be like them. All parents should be aware about the young girls wanting the body image like Barbie the doll. The suggestion is not to let the girls play with barbie dolls but to be more informed about which toys they should be giving to their children and be careful on how those toys may or may not affect them. http://www.mirror-mirror.org/barbie-and-body-image.htm
What Is It And What Happens?
Anorexia Nervosa affects every part of the body such as bones, teeth, skin, heart, and blood vessels. Once the body is too thin for your height it is underweight which means that the body may get low blood pressure. The heart can start to beat slower and not get enough blood into the other organs that it needs. The disease can make the body get dehydrated by not drinking enough water or from not eating any food. Less blood means feeling dizzy and faint when you stand up. Once the doctor says that you may have some type of arrhythmia or heart disease, it may kill the sickened one if they do not get treated right away. Anorexia also harms the body when estrogen is not producing . The estrogen is suppose to help the bones stay healthy and strong. When the body has Anorexia for a very long time the bones in the the body will get weaker and weaker as time passes. If the illness gets stronger then there can be a big risk where the bones are easily breakable and it would be even more risky if the person who has anorexia and is older. When anorexia gets worse, the skin gets dried up and brittle, and hair starts to fall out. Some people may get thin and get fine hair on their face and body if their condition is serious. If a women has anorexia, the ovaries will stop producing hormones. Periods will slow down or automatically stop. If the woman with anorexia gets treatment and puts on more weight, the periods may get back to normal. When women are highly at risk of Anorexia, they have a higher chance to not be able to get pregnant. When a woman is pregnant, they need to stay in a healthy condition in order to keep the fetus alive. Taking vitamins and eating healthy is the main priority in a woman's pregnancy. If a pregnancy takes over while anorexia is in the body, the baby can be born early or there may be a miscarriage. If you have had anorexia for a very long period of time the blood sugars get low and the body may start to feel weak, nervous, and irritable. Bad headaches are included when blood pressure gets low. When anorexia has came into the body the hormone called leptin made in fat cells will get worse. If the body doesn't have enough of leptin the brain can tell the body to stop eating or keep eating and begins to regulate how the body burns fat. If the body takes laxatives it may have trouble to digest the food that gets into the body. http://www.webmd.boots.com/mental-health/anorexia-what-anorexia-can-do-to-your-body
Binge Eating
Binge eating disorder is known as compulsive overeating and is when people eat large amounts of food while they are feeling out of control and powerless to be able to stop. Symptoms in binge eating can be a very sad thing. People who have this eating disorder can be very embarrassed to have a disorder like this so that is why they secretly eat a lot. That is why they always try to hide their symptoms and eat secretly. Many people who have this disorder to binge are overweight or obese, but some are normal weight too. The symptoms in binge eating can be a little similar to anorexia. Binge eating is very hard to control when you are eating. Examples include eating large amounts of food and eating when you're full. Binging is also getting food and hiding it for later to eat it secretly and eating throughout the day with no mealtime plans. There are emotional symptoms to binge eating such as feeling stressed and embarrassed over how much you're eating. When binging is going on, the body is numb and you feel like you're not there. Having the need to eat more when you are not fully satisfied no matter how much you eat and feeling disgusted when you overeat .. Having the desperation to control their own eating weight but still not have any control over it. People who have the binge eating disorder have a wide variety of physical, emotional, and social problems. When a person has been binging for a long period of time they can have very bad health problems, for example, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, etc. http://www.helpguide.org/mental/binge_eating_disorder.htm
Many of these eating disorders can be a very bad experience.
Purging
Purging anorexia is where people make themselves volmit, drink laxatives, or they give themselves enemas.By making themselves vomit, they make themselves gag on their fingers or with the end side of a tooth brush. If a person has already had anorexia, it will not be very hard for them to make themselves vomit. It would be the easiest thing to possibly do. Purging only gets rid a third of what the person has eaten and gets rid of some calories. This is because purging does not work until the food you've eaten gets into your intestines. Some people like to take water pills called diuretics to be able to purge. All the pills do is make you body get rid of water and not fat. People think they can get rid of calories if they have enemas, but that does not get rid of calories. Purging is different that anorexia nervosa because people with purging disorder are not under weight. The eating disorder to purge is not specified because scientifically purging may be common as bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa in women. Some of the signs in purging disorder are going to the restroom often right after meals, and right after using laxatives, and having the obsession over their own appearance and weight. Other signs also are swollen cheeks, popped blood vessels in the eyes and clear teeth which are signs of excessive vomiting.
Causes
Anorexia has many cause. Many of the causes can often be from (family, friends. bullying, and social media) magazines are most common because there are models and movie stars who look like they have this perfect life. In reality they do not have such a perfect life. Most of the celebrities have some type of eating disorder. The cause to Anorexia are more than one combination, people can have eating disorders because of genetics, neurobiological, nutritional, psychological, social and cultural reasons. Most importantly, the media is what is causing young teens to go through such a hard illness. They watch television, and the celebrities on the tv shows are supposedly “perfect” but in reality they do not realize the meaning of powerful women. For many people there is a destructive cycle that makes people want to be anorexic and want to lose weight even more and they think that they will look attractive. Anorexia is not attractive, it is a mental sickness. These factors are particularly prevalent in cultures that place considerable importance upon body image, chiefly a specific body type. There may be evidence out there that a Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder can also develop anorexia. http://www.helpguide.org/mental/anorexia_signs_symptoms_causes_treatment.htm These eating disorders have their similarities. They both cause depression, low self esteem, and health issues. Trying to prevent anorexia means to just have healthy eating habits, and a healthy body image. People who start to notice anorexia can take charge and make an appointment with a professional therapist and have them help them with their poor body image and their eating habits, before anything can get worse.
Symptoms and Signs
Symptoms in anorexia are very difficult for the body. There are differences between healthy dieting and anorexia. Healthy dieting is when you are in control of everything you eat and everything you do. The self esteem is great and if the person is on a diet they can be able to look at themselves in the mirror without thinking bad about themselves. Healthy people that are on a regular diet like to improve their health and appearances. Their goal is to lose weight the right way, by watching what they eat and by exercising the right way. Anorexic people are very opposite of healthy people. Anorexic people are in an attempt to control life and emotions. Self-esteem is what is mostly controlled the person who has anorexia . Self-esteem is based entirely on how that sick person is feeling about themselves. When the person has anorexia they think that losing weight will bring happiness when in reality it is causing them to kill themselves. In their head, becoming thin is all that matters, they do not care about their health at all. Most family and friends will not be able to spot the signs of anorexia. Anorexia can get the person to the point where they are dramatically losing weight and still say they are still fat. They will point out the stomach, hips, and thighs. Even by noticing their own clothes they worry they still have too much weight on them and obsess about losing more weight. Staring at themselves in the mirror checking out their body looking for flaws is like an obsession, but there is always something there that they would not like to see.
Treatment
There are several ways to treat the disease. The following ways include going to Physicians, Dieticians, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Counselors, etc. It is very difficult for the people who are going through this tragedy because they are often in denial because they will not admit that they are ill. Anorexia Nervosa is very difficult to treat, it takes time and patience, sometimes people who have the illness grow out of it. Many people who are sick with Anorexia Nervosa are admitted into the hospital depending on how severe their illness has gotten. The treatment strategies are restored weight loss, to work on self esteem, and to work on their personal problems. It is always very important to recognise signs and symptoms at an early age before the behavior gets locked in. Families who are suffering from a loved one that has this disease may need to have more education about expressing feelings because the person with the illness is the symptom of unhealthy lack of confidence in the family. The person with the illness needs to improve their eating disorder or there will be no way for them to get themselves back up on their feet. Restoring the person who has anorexia back to their normal weight can be a difficult thing to do but it is the safest also. Restoring their healthy eating habits back in place on how they used to be can after all, saves their lives.
